About Us

SIPAZ is a System of Communication for peace in Colombia, that explores with media resources to strengthen a national network of grassroots organizations working for peaceful solutions to conflicts in Colombia.  By linking these initiatives using the Internet, and as apart of larger grassroots communication processes using radio, TV and printed media, SIPAZ seeks to better understand how community media can make a difference in peacebuilding from a grassroots perspective.

We have been working in the field of communication as a process for several years. We are not interested in the medium, but in the social project in which the medium is tied in. This is the way we understand mixed media.

SIPAZ is a project of communication that coordinates welfare activities carried out by several groups of Colombians that work together all over the country to generate solutions for inequity and to prevent the destruction of the environment. Its symbols, its pedagogical, technological and human enterprises are ignored by the warriors and shut out by the dealers of information. We work through a system of 24 community media networks, using the media as vehicles for exchanges and distribution of useful information for local development.

This project was executed through the Fundación Colombia Multicolor (direccion@colombiamulticolor.net), an organization for communication and environment that believes in life and our own dreams as being multiple nuances of our bio-diversity, much more than the red and the black of war.

OBJETIVES

Our general objective of is to structure and put in place a national system of information for peace, based on experience with organizing communications (radio, television and Internet) in local communities.

The following are our specific objectives:

To generate a greater impact in each region, recognition at the national level, for local efforts on behalf of peace and sustainable development, by establishing links between local projects.

To promote simultaneous research in five regions of Colombia on the possibilities of generating interchange and joint communication activites, using such technical supports as e-mail, chat rooms, mailing lists, the web page, and issuing and receiving materials over the Interenet.

To systematize local experiments on behalf of peace and sustainable development through the use of communication media to disseminate them over increasingly broad circuits, starting with the strengthening of community media.

To improve the quality of communication products to help build an environment- and peace-oriented culture in the region of each project.

To expand and enhance training for access to communications media (radio, television and the Internet).

To optimize the use of e-mail and Internet as mechanisms for exchanging information.

And to systematize experiments with the use of Internet and seek to instill a sense of ownership (“appropiation”) both of technology itself and of its contents.
